Have Posters Will Travel
Travel posters began as advertisements for the tourism industry. Designed to lure potential visitors to "exotic" lands and "exciting" destinations, travel posters were often commissioned by regional tourism offices.
Travel poster artists sought to portray the natural beauty of a region through different pictorial styles. Vintage travel posters such as Michael Cassidy's Live Aloha, featuring a smiling woman dressed in a Hawaiian skirt, boasted bright colors and enticing imagery.
Other poster artists such as Roger Broders, used both light and color to unique effect in his advertising images for Saint-Maxine, Monaco, and La Cote D'azur.
Of course, not all travel posters were advertisements for locations, some emphasized getting to a location. Adolphe Mouron Cassandre's travel posters for the transatlantic ocean liner Normandie, provide us with some of the most enduring vintage poster images. Throughout his career, the Art Deco artist created posters that are both classic and timeless.
Regardless of their style, these artists continued in the tradition of the great early posterists - Jules Chéret, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha, and Leonetto Cappiello.
