Unforgettable Photography
Some of the most unforgettable moments of the 21st century have been captured on film: the six marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima, Babe Ruth bowing to fans at Yankee stadium, the lone protester defying a tank in Tiananmen Square. These images, which provide a dramatic visual chronicle of our times, have all been reproduced as art prints.
Not all photography is endued with such rich historic significance however. Some images enthrall us by their sheer beauty alone. Photographers such as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston inspired millions of people with their spectacular photographs of the American western landscape.
Many of their contemporaries on the other hand, were known for their striking portraits of ordinary people. Henri Cartier-Bresson was partial to impersonal snap shots in which he tried to catch "the decisive moment" of an event. Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange were more concerned with the psychology of the people they photographed, while Brassai, who confined his photography to the avenues and byways of Paris, was preoccupied by place and setting.
Whatever their preferred style, these photographers have helped changed the way we view the world. Their images remain as a testament to the power of lens and film.
