The Power of Motivational Posters
From a firefighter walking into a towering inferno, to a mountain climber scaling icy cliffs, motivational posters provide us with inspiration to accomplish things we never would have thought possible.
Motivational posters give us a goal to aim towards. How many of us grew up with motivational sports posters on our bedroom walls, dreaming of a time when, through hard work and determination, we would make it to the Olympics.
These posters can also visually reinforce the importance of the virtues we all strive towards, virtues such as patience, courage, and love. Some motivational posters even provide us with words to live by, heartening us with timeless proverbs.
Governments have known about the galvanizing power of posters for decades. During both the first and second World War the U.S. army used war posters to help recruit young men for the war effort. These posters provided a stirring appeal to patriotism. Motivational posters were also used to encourage women into the wartime work force.
Today, propaganda posters have been replaced by T.V. advertisements. While television is indeed a powerful medium, there is still an inherent power to the static image -- a power evidenced by the popularity of motivational posters.
