Fantasy Art Revival
A legacy of medieval fairy tales and romantic legend, fantasy art is by no means a new phenomenon. With the publication of The Hobbit in 1937, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien in the 1950s however, fantasy art underwent a revival.
Tolkien's books instilled generations of readers with a love
of the fantastical. As a result, reams of derivative fiction featuring fire-breathing dragons, villainous orcs, and bearded wizards began to be published. At first, fantasy art was used simply as a means of illustrating this burgeoning literary genre. It soon became apparent however, that fantasy art would flourish as an art form of its own.
Today, fantasy artists produce paintings and illustrations for books, album covers, video covers, posters, and even as conceptual images for film. Original art work by masters such as Frank Frazetta and Rodney Matthews grace the
walls of museums and art galleries. Fellow illustrators such as Chris Achilleos and Ken Kelly have also achieved international renown with their portrayals of exotic locals and primal battlefields.
Thanks largely in part to the dissemination of images through the Internet, fantasy art is becoming increasingly popular. Millions of people are gaining a new found respect for fantasy art and artists alike.
