Onward Christian Posters
After the 1st century, Christianity spread rapidly throughout the Roman world and the Near East. Paintings of Christ and his disciples -- the ancient equivalent of our modern day Christian posters -- began to surface.
Many leaders of the Church such as the bishop Eusebius, frowned on the depictions, believing them to be idolatrous. Still, the images became so common that by 250 A.D. there were numerous examples of paintings of the nativity and allegories of the Good Shepherd.
One of the first images of Christ we have dates from the 6th century during the Byzantine period. The image of "Christ Pantocrator" or "ruler of all" presents us with a haloed, majestic and all-powerful Jesus. Somewhere along the religious timeline however, this depiction of Jesus changed.
Completed in 1498, Da Vinci's Last Supper serves us up an ideal pictorial representation of Jesus. Correggio's, Deposition from the Cross, painted in 1525 during the Renaissance period, shows us a suffering and pained Jesus, while Rembrant's Head of Christ,
painted in 1655 during the Baroque period, offers us a personal Jesus.
Since then, countless artists from Heinrich Hoffman to Salvador Dali have attempted to put their own personal spin on the depiction of Christ. Many of these images have been printed as Christian posters. There is much more information about Christ at the Vatican's home site.
