Celebrity Photos and Autograph Hunters
Celebrity photos are a big business. A search of the internet will reveal numerous online dealers selling autographed photos of your favorite stars. Collectors search these sites for elusive signatures to add to their collection -- sometimes paying hundreds of dollars for an actor's ineligible scrawl.
Of course, the only way to be 100% certain that a signature is authentic is by obtaining it yourself from a celebrity. This is known as an "In-Person" signature. While these autographs can be written on anything from notes to napkins, photos are the preferred method of preserving celebrity signatures.
Many dealers hire chasers to obtain celebrity autographs. Armed with celebrity photos, chasers stake out movie premiers and awards shows waiting for their celebrity prey to turn up.
Amateur collectors who don't feel like loitering about Tinseltown waiting for a high-profile mark, or who can't afford to purchase signed celebrity photos from a reputable dealer, may also obtain signatures through the mail by writing to a celebrity. While this method allows collectors to avoid the verbal abuse hurled at them from moody stars, the downside is that it may take years, if ever, for them to receive a response.
