Car Posters: Grand Prix's Golden Era
It was the 8th of August, 1937, at the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo. After ignoring repeated signals for a pit stop, Manfred von Brauchitsch managed to gain the pole position after fellow Mercedes teammate, Rudolf Caracciola, was forced into the pit to change spark plugs.
After clawing his way back from 5th place, Caracciola managed to once again take the lead, only to lose it during another pit stop. Brauchitsch ended up winning the race, and Mercedes Benz won the day, with top three finishes for its drivers.
The car posters advertising the event help remind us of time often referred to as the Golden Era of Grand Prix racing. Between 1934 -1939, some of the greatest moments in racing history took place. Two car manufacturers dominated the race track, Mercedes-Benz with their "Silberpfeile" or Silver Arrows, and Auto Union with their "Silberfische" or Silver Fishes.
While many car posters of this era showcase the Monaco Grand Prix, the most famous races of this era were The French GP 1934, The German GP 1935, and The AVUS race 1937.
Today, the bullet-shaped cars of the Grand Prix have been replaced by streamlined cars. Golden Era drivers like Rudy Caracciola have been replaced with drivers like Michael Schumacher. Still, if everything else in the sport has changed, the car posters haven't, and through them we may always remember the Golden Era.
