Blacklight Posters 101
Blacklight posters are attention grabbers. When exposed to the right lighting conditions they produce such bright, vibrant
colors that they almost appear to glow - an ideal effect for showcasing those swirling psychedelic music posters.
Our eyes are able to see a range of colors from red to blue in the color spectrum.
The light with a frequency just below red light is called "infra-red," while the light with a frequency just above blue light is called "ultra-violet." While both
infra-red and ultraviolet light is beyond the range of our eyes to detect, they are both important.
Infra-red light has many commercial applications and is used in many motion detectors. Ultra-violet on the other hand, can be used to make blacklight posters glow. Blacklight posters contain phosphorescent material. When black lamps - ordinary lamps with light bulbs designed to emit ultra-violet light - illuminate blacklight posters, the materials in the posters absorb this light and then re-emit it at lower frequencies that our eyes can see.
Despite their name, blacklights aren't really black, but are more of a dim violet. If you turn on a black light bulb in a dark room, it won't brighten it very much. In fact, the room will remain almost black. The bulbs do emit lots of light however, it's just that we can't see it.
