Animal Magnetism
Man has always been fascinated by animals, and as a result of this captivation, animal art does a brisk business. Each year millions of animal calendars, greeting cards, and of course posters and art prints, are sold worldwide.
Whether you rate as a Brigitte Bardot, or a budding Cruella DeVil on the animal lover spectrum, chances are you've come across some of the more famous animal pictures. Perennially popular, one of these is C. M. Coolidge's "Dogs Playing Poker" poster.
Coolidge worked as a druggist and sign painter during the late 19th century. During his spare time however, he liked to paint dogs in human poses. Over the years, Coolidge produced many animal pictures of dogs playing poker for cigar companies. Eventually, advertisers Brown & Bigelow turned these paintings into posters.
Another popular series of animal pictures is John James Audubon's Birds of America prints. Audubon was a naturalist with a passion for all manner of birds, from wild turkeys to Canadian geese. Audubon spent much of his life slogging through swamps and marshlands in order to sketch the feathered animals. Throughout the last century, Audubon prints have been widely admired by ornithologists, bird lovers, and art enthusiasts alike. His prints have inspired the National Audubon Society, which is dedicated to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.
